New Year’s Day (Anul nou)
New Year’s Day (Anul Nou) is a public holiday in Romania on January 1 every year. New Year’s Day, January 1, marks the start of the year in the Gregorian calendar, which is used in many countries. New Year’s Day is a holiday that is celebrated worldwide.
Orthodox Easter (Pastele)
Easter Day (Pastele) is a public holiday across Romania and celebrates Jesus’ resurrection from death, as told in the Christian bible. Romania’s Easter holiday follows the Orthodox Easter date, which is often different from the Easter date determined by other Christian churches.
Pentecost (Rusaliile)
Whit Monday and Whit Sunday (Rusalii or Rusaliile), also called Pentecost, are public holidays in Romania to celebrate the Christian belief of the Holy Spirit’s descent on Jesus Christ’s disciples. Many Romanians have the day off work and school on Whit Monday. Many people can see the Calusarii’s dance, which is a healing and protection ritual against mythical creatures, around the time of Whit Sunday. Many churches hold special services to celebrate Pentecost.
Labor Day
Labor Day (Ziua Tatalui) is an annual holiday to honor workers across Romania. It is also celebrated in many countries worldwide. Many Romanians have the day off work or school on Labor Day (also spelled as Labour Day). Some people attend social gatherings or visit friends and family. It is also a popular holiday to relax at home, have an outdoor picnic or visit the beach, among other leisure activities. Labor Day is a national public holiday in Romania so banks, public offices, and many private businesses are closed. People intending to travel via public transport during public holidays must check with the public transit authorities on any changes to time schedules.
National Day
Romania’s National Day, or Great Union Day (Ziua Marii Uniri), is an annual public holiday on December 1 to celebrate the unification of Romanian provinces. Romania celebrates its national day, also called 1918 Union Day, with military parades and public speeches given by national leaders in cities such as Bucharest and in Alba Iulia (the “union city”). Many people in Romania have the day off work and school.
Christmas Day
Christmas Day (Craciun) is an annual public holiday in Romania on December 25, along with the second day of Christmas (December 26). It is a Christian holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus. Many Romanians start celebrating Christmas weeks before December 25. Fun Christmas activities include decorating Christmas trees, caroling songs from home to home, and giving presents to one another on Christmas Eve (Ajunul Craciunului).
