New Year’s Day
New Year’s Day is the first day of the year, in the Gregorian calendar, and falls exactly one week after the Christmas Day of the previous year. New Year’s Day is a public holiday in all countries that observe the Gregorian calendar, with the exception of Israel. Some countries may also have January 2nd as
an additional New Year holiday
Good Friday
The most important events in Christianity are the death and later resurrection of Jesus Christ, who Christians believe is the Son of God, and whose life and teachings are the foundation of Christianity.Good Friday occurs on the Friday before Easter. The day commemorates the Crucifixion of Jesus. Good Friday is a day of mourning. During special Good Friday services Christians meditate on Jesus’s suffering and death on the cross, and what this means for their faith.
Labour Day
Labour Day is a statutory national holiday celebrated on the first Monday. The date celebrated by the majority of the rest of the world.
Whit Monday
Whit Monday or Pentecost Monday is the holiday celebrated the day after Pentecost, a movable feast in the Christian calendar. It is movable because it is determined by the
date of Easter.
Carnival Monday (J’ouver)
The Antiguan Carnival is a celebration of music and dance held annually from the end of July to the first Tuesday in August. Barbuda’s Carnival, held in June, is known as Caribana. The Antiguan and Barbudan Carnivals replaced the Old Time Christmas Festival in 1957, with hopes of inspiring tourism in Antigua and Barbuda. Some elements of the Christmas Festival remain in the modern Carnival celebrations.
National Heroes Day
Antigua has four citizens who have been designated as National Heroes, and December 9 is a public holiday to honor and celebrate all of them. The date is the birthday of one of the four, Sir Vere Cornwall Bird, the first prime minister of Antigua, who is considered the father of the nation. The others are King Court, who led a slave revolt in 1736; Dame Ellen Georgian Nellie Robinson, a pioneer in education; and Sir Vivian Richards, one of the world’s greatest cricket players, who was captain of the West Indies team from 1985 to
1991.
Christmas Day
On this day, over 2 billion people will celebrate the birth of Christ. The day celebrates the Nativity of Jesus which took place 25 December 1 BC. Whilst the holiday has a strong grounding in the story of the birth of Jesus, many of the traditions we associate with Christmas have evolved from pre-christian beliefs and certainly the traditions have evolved beyond purely a Christian holiday to have a wider secular significance.
