New Year’s Day
New Year’s Day is the first day of the calendar year and is celebrated each January 1st. In Australia, the day is marked by a public holiday but, for many, it’s simply a day of recovering from the night before – New Year’s Eve.
Australia Day
Australia Day today consists of formal ceremonies around the nation along with local fun events. On January 26, 1788 Captain Arthur Phillip became the first Governor of the colony of New South Wales and the fledging colony soon began to celebrate the anniversary of this date.
Canberra Day
Canberra Day is a public holiday celebrated in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) region of Australia. Canberra Day is celebrated on the second Monday in March. The day celebrates a ceremony that was held on 12 March 1913, during which Lady Denman, the wife of the then Governor-General Lord Denman formally named and founded the city.
Good Friday
Many countries observe Good Friday as a national holiday. The most important events in Christianity are the death and later resurrection of Jesus Christ, who Christians believe is the Son of God, and whose life and teachings are the foundation of Christianity. Good Friday occurs on the Friday before Easter. The day commemorates the Crucifixion of Jesus.
Easter Monday
Easter Monday is a Christian holiday celebrated the day after Easter Sunday. Formerly, it was celebrated as Easter Week in many places, but was reduced to a one day celebration in the 19th century. Easter (also called Pascha) is generally accounted the most important holiday of the Christian year, observed in March or April each year to celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead after his death by crucifixion, which Christians believe happened at about this time of year, almost two thousand years ago.
Anzac Day
ANZAC Day – 25 April – is arguably Australia’s most important national occasion. It marks the anniversary of the first key military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War.ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. The troops in those forces became known as ANZACs, and the pride in the name endures
to this day.
Queen’s Birthday
The Queen’s Birthday holiday is a moveable feast celebrating the birthday of Queen Elizabeth II who is not only Queen of Great Britain but also Queen of Australia and New Zealand. In Australia, except in the state of Western Australia, it is celebrated on the second Monday of June. The holiday also marks the start of the Australian ski season. In Western Australia, the Queen’s Birthday holiday is celebrated in late September or early October.
Family & Community Day
The Family and Community public holiday is for the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) only. It’s purpose is to provide a holiday for people to spend with their family and friends. It is one of the rarer types of public holidays in that it’s not taken as a memorial or celebration day. Most businesses are closed on the day.
Labour Day
Labour Day is a public holiday in Australia that was originally called ‘Eight Hours Day’. It commemorates the achievements of organized labour to implement the eight-hour day in the middle of the nineteenth century. Previously workers were required to work 10 – 12 hours a day for six days a week. While a change was made to the hours worked each day, the five day work week that most people enjoy today took almost a hundred years longer and was finally adopted in 1948.
Christmas Day
On this day, over 2 billion people will celebrate the birth of Christ. The day celebrates the Nativity of Jesus which took place 25 December 1 BC. Whilst the holiday has a strong grounding in the story of the birth of Jesus, many of the traditions we associate with Christmas have evolved from pre-christian beliefs and certainly the traditions have evolved beyond purely a Christian holiday to have a wider secular significance.
Boxing Day
Boxing Day Celebrated on 26th December. Typically it will be moved and celebrated on the next weekday if 26 December is a Saturday or Sunday. It has been said that the name of Boxing Day comes from people getting rid of empty boxes from presents after Christmas day.
